La stagione che non c’era

(The Season That Never Was)

Ugo Guanda Editore, August 2025, pp.256

Yugoslavia, 1990. As the country stands on the brink of war, the lives of a young man, a young woman and a child become entwined with the fate of a country about to disappear.

Nene and Merima return to a small town near Sarajevo and meet again on the threshold of adulthood, just as nationalist tensions reach breaking point. Nene is an artist, determined to capture the dreams and contradictions of his generation before everything he knows is lost. Merima is fighting the growing forces of extremism while trying to heal an old wound that has shaped both her life and that of her eight-year-old daughter, Eliza, who has never known her father.

Through their lives, and those of the people around them, this deeply human novel portrays a society on the brink of disaster, where dreams and hopes collide with history and the rise of radical ideologies that still shape Europe today.

  • “The book is beautiful, well written (…) and extremely timely. (…) Mujčić has managed to transform painful memories and grief into true literature.”

    Wlodek Goldkorn, Robinson

  • “A book that speaks to anyone who has watched their world change before their very eyes, who knows the individual’s powerlessness in the face of the forces of history, and the pain of someone desperately trying to hold on to something while everything slips away.”

    Giulia Basso, Il Piccolo

  • “One of the most authentic voices in post-Yugoslav European fiction.”

    Riccardo Michelucci, Avvenire

  • “She had a brilliant idea: interspersing the fiction […] with excerpts from radio and television broadcasts aired during those days. (…) A lucid and elegant chronicle of an end foretold.”

Lara Ricci, Domenica – Il Sole 24 Ore

  • “In the world Mujčić has saved, destruction cannot prevail.”

    Mara Gergolet, La Lettura
